Assessment Task 3
Description
Assessment 3 builds on your work in the discussion boards (Assessment 2). For this assessment, you will be locating and evaluating four recent journal articles (last 5 years are preferred) related to the clinical question that you proposed in Assessment 2. You will summarise and evaluate the articles in an annotated bibliography.
Instructions
Using what you have learned from modules 1-6 create a report on an annotated bibliography based on the topic selected in assignment 2. The report needs to contain: Structure of the written assessment:
- Section
- suggestions
Criteria
- Knowledge of the underpinning principles and theories of research
- Demonstrate an ability to locate and select appropriate literature to answer a healthcare question
- Show critical thinking concerning the selected articles and develop a coherent argument for how they address the specified research question
- Apply academic convention to develop a clear and logical argument within the word limit.
Brief Summary of Assessment Requirements
Assessment Task: Prepare an annotated bibliography based on a clinical question proposed in Assessment 2.
Key Pointers to Cover:
- Article Selection: Locate and evaluate four recent journal articles (preferably published in the last 5 years) relevant to your clinical question.
- Summary & Evaluation: Each article must be summarized (key aims, methods, findings) and critically evaluated (relevance, quality, reliability).
- Annotated Bibliography Format: Include references in correct academic format with annotations for each article.
- Knowledge & Critical Thinking: Demonstrate understanding of research principles, critically analyze findings, and show coherence in addressing the research question.
- Academic Conventions: Maintain logical flow, clarity, proper referencing, and adhere to the word limit.
Step-by-Step Approach by the Academic Mentor
Step 1: Understanding the Clinical Question
- Mentor guided the student to revisit their clinical question from Assessment 2.
- Emphasis was placed on clearly defining the focus to ensure article search was targeted and relevant.
Step 2: Literature Search & Article Selection
- The mentor demonstrated how to use academic databases like PubMed, CINAHL, and Google Scholar.
- Key criteria discussed: recent publications, peer-reviewed journals, relevance, and credibility.
- The student was guided to shortlist four articles that best addressed the clinical question.
Step 3: Summarizing Each Article
- Mentor instructed the student to extract key points: aim, methodology, results, and conclusions.
- Highlighted importance of concise yet comprehensive summaries.
Step 4: Critical Evaluation of Articles
- Mentor showed how to assess strengths, weaknesses, biases, and applicability of each study.
- Students were guided to consider how each article contributed to answering the clinical question.
Step 5: Structuring the Annotated Bibliography
- Mentor provided a framework for each entry: Citation → Summary → Critical Appraisal → Relevance to Research Question.
- Guidance was given on academic formatting, logical flow, and coherence.
Step 6: Final Review & Submission
- Mentor encouraged checking for: proper referencing, word count compliance, clarity, and critical depth.
- Student revised the annotations based on mentor feedback, improving readability and argumentation.
Outcome Achieved
- Completed Annotated Bibliography: Four well-chosen articles, each critically evaluated and clearly linked to the clinical question.
- Learning Objectives Covered:
- Ability to locate and select relevant research literature.
- Application of research principles and theories in clinical context.
- Development of critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Effective academic writing and referencing skills.
- Ability to synthesize information and present a coherent argument.
