Unethical Behaviors in a Nursing Master’s Program and Nursing Practice: A Comparative Examination

Unethical behaviors in nursing, whether in academic settings or clinical practice, can have significant consequences for individual nurses and the profession at large. In a nursing Master’s program, academic dishonesty such as plagiarism is a serious ethical violation. Plagiarism undermines academic integrity, devalues the learning process, and may lead to disciplinary actions including failing grades, suspension, or expulsion (Lang, 2013). For example, a student who copies a section of a research paper without proper citation may face an academic integrity review, jeopardizing their standing in the program and future licensure opportunities.

In clinical practice, unethical conduct can have even more severe consequences, as it directly affects patient safety and public trust. For instance, a nurse falsifying patient records to hide a medication error violates both ethical and legal standards. This behavior not only endangers the patient but can also lead to job termination, license revocation, and legal action (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015). Unlike plagiarism, which primarily affects academic integrity, unethical behavior in practice impacts patient outcomes and professional credibility.

Both settings emphasize accountability, responsibility, and integrity. However, while academic misconduct may delay or halt a nurse’s career progression, unethical clinical practice can cause irreversible harm to patients and damage public trust in the profession. To uphold ethical standards, both academic institutions and healthcare organizations must enforce clear policies and provide education on professional ethics.
