Exploring a Peer-Reviewed Mental Health Article and Database Utility

Mental health is a vital component of holistic patient care and a growing concern in both inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings. As an advanced practice nurse, staying updated with current evidence-based practices is essential to deliver safe and effective care. For this assignment, I identified a peer-reviewed article that aligns with my clinical interest in the treatment of depression among adults in primary care settings.

The article selected is titled:
Cuijpers, P., Karyotaki, E., de Wit, L., Ebert, D. D., & Cipriani, A. (2020). The effects of psychotherapies for major depression in adults on remission, recovery and improvement: A meta-analysis. Journal of Affective Disorders, 277, 142–149. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jad.2020.08.057

This article was retrieved from the CINAHL Plus with Full Text database, which is accessible through my institution’s library. The article is a meta-analysis of various psychotherapies and their outcomes in managing major depressive disorder (MDD), which directly relates to my practice in mental health nursing. It provides robust evidence for clinical decision-making regarding non-pharmacologic interventions in managing depression.

Difficulties Encountered During the Search

While searching for this article, one of the primary challenges I experienced was narrowing down the search results to include only high-quality, peer-reviewed articles relevant to adult mental health and nursing practice. Using broad search terms like “mental health” or “depression” yielded thousands of results, many of which were not directly applicable to my area of interest. I had to refine my search using specific keywords such as “psychotherapy,” “major depressive disorder,” and “treatment outcomes” and apply filters for peer-reviewed sources published in the last five years. Another challenge was evaluating the relevance and quality of the studies—many articles lacked clear methodology or focused on adolescent or geriatric populations rather than adults in primary care.

Usefulness of the Database for Colleagues

CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) is an excellent resource for nurses and healthcare professionals seeking evidence-based, peer-reviewed research articles. It provides access to a wide range of scholarly articles, continuing education materials, and research studies specifically related to nursing and allied health disciplines. I believe this database would be extremely useful for my colleagues, especially those involved in clinical research, quality improvement projects, or advanced practice roles. Its focus on nursing and allied health makes it more targeted and relevant than general databases like Google Scholar.

Recommendation of the Database

I would highly recommend the CINAHL Plus database to fellow nursing professionals. It is user-friendly, supports Boolean searching, and includes filters that help refine searches for better accuracy. Its extensive library of nursing-focused journals ensures that users can find credible, up-to-date, and clinically relevant content. Additionally, the integration of citation tools and access to full-text articles significantly enhances its utility in academic and professional writing. As a nurse practitioner in training, having reliable access to such resources is essential in promoting evidence-based practice and improving patient outcomes in mental health care.
